Der Vortrag mit dem Titel "Nackte Jungs sind Anthropologie": Bad Gays, Primitivism, and the Popular Sciences of Anthropology and Homosexuality findet am Mittwoch, den 20. November 2024 um 18 Uhr im ESA Hauptgebäude in Hörsaal M statt. Vortragssprache ist Englisch, Fragen können auf Englisch und Deutsch gestellt werden.

Der Vortrag wird ausgerichtet von Dr. Ivo Raband (Kunstgeschichtliches Seminar) und gefördert durch Mittel der Gleichstellung des Fachbereichs Kulturwissenschaften/Fakultät für Geisteswissenschaften.

Abstract des Vortrags: Focusing on Wilhelm von Gloeden and Sascha Schneider, two artists whose troubled and problematic work bridged the new popular sciences of sexology and anthropology at the turn of the 20th century in Germany, this lecture explores what so-called “bad gays,” evil and complicated queers in history, can teach us about how today’s gay subjectivities came to be.

Zum Vortragenden: Ben Miller is a writer and historian living in Berlin. With Huw Lemmey, he hosts Bad Gays, a podcast about evil and complicated queers in history, which has been downloaded nearly two million times; a book based on the show and passionately arguing for a more complex and political queer public history, Bad Gays: A Homosexual History, was published by Verso in 2022, received rave reviews in the Washington Post and the Los Angeles Review of Books, among others, and has been translated into Italian, Spanish (in progress) and Thai (in progress.) His next book, a biography of the fashion designer Rudi Gernreich that doubles as a history of how the politics of liberation traveled from the European interwar avant-garde to 1960s California, is currently under contract with W. W. Norton.

Zusätzlich zum Vortrag findet ein Workshop am 21. November 2024 (10–12 Uhr, ESA-W R120) statt. Im Rahmen des Workshops können vertiefende Fragen zum Vortrag gestellt und aktuelle Themen der Queer Studies für die Fächer der Kulturwissenschaften diskutiert werden.
