Artificial Intelligence in Higher Education Teaching

Generative artificial intelligence (gAI), in the form of chatbot systems for instance, has become an integral part of the world. ChatGPT, which has been developed by OpenAI, is able to comprehend and produce manlike texts on the basis of communication contexts. It has been trained with many texts. The utilization of ChatGPT, in terms of teaching, answering questions, providing information or creating creative content, is currently in discussion. Especially due to the low-threshold access and easy usage, KI- systems such as ChatGPT, reach the mass. There are also new approaches to teaching and learning in the areas of higher education didactics. Responsible use of artificial intelligence is possible!

Tip: 

  • The HUL offers a topic page on generative AI from the Hamburg Center for University Teaching and Learning, where you will also find interactive offers in the current semester.
  • With “UHHGPT”, the UHH provides free access to ChatGPT as a part of a pilot phase – a utilization which is based on artificial intelligence. You can use “UHHGPT” without any personal data being transmitted or stored. Moreover, unlike the free version of ChatGPT, the information entered is not used to train the underlying AI or chatbot.
  • By subscribing to the DDLitLab gKI newsletter, you can stay up to date on events and current developments on the topic of generative AI at the University of Hamburg. 

KI in Humanities : Since February first, Prof. Dr. Ralf Möller holds a professorship for “Artificial Intelligence in Humanities” in  the department of philosophy. Ralf Möller and his team will be establishing the newly-founded Institution for Humanities-Centered Artificial Intelligence (CHAI) in the department of philosophy and thus, the team will be advancing the training of teachers and students in terms of functions und reflected utilization of generative KI and other learning methods. A course about “GenAI in Education, Science, and Society” will take place in the summer semester 2024.

KI-Hands-on: Diskussion Entwurf Rahmenempfehlungen zum Umgang mit gKI-Systemen in Studium und Lehre an der UHH

An vielen Hochschulen werden derzeit Richtlinien zum Umgang mit generativer KI in Studium und Lehre erarbeitet, so auch an der Universität Hamburg. Im Auftrag des Präsidiums hat eine Arbeitsgruppe um Gabi Reinmann und Kai-Uwe Schnapp ein Empfehlungspapier erarbeitet, das demnächst vorgelegt werden soll.
Interessierte Mitglieder der UHH sind zum „KI-Hands-on“ zur Beteiligung eingeladen. Im Rahmen einer gemeinsamen Präsenzveranstaltung soll der Entwurf diskutiert und Feedback gesammelt werden. Ziel der Veranstaltung ist es, die Richtlinien vor dem Hintergrund unterschiedlicher Fächerkulturen zu verbessern und auf etwaige blinde Flecken oder Schwierigkeiten aufmerksam zu werden.
Alle Angemeldeten werden wenige Tage vor dem Termin die neueste Entwurfsfassung erhalten.

KI Hands-on: Workshop Use Cases (DDLitLab, UHH)

Generative KI-Tools wie ChatGPT und Co. werfen nicht nur an der Universität Hamburg viele Fragen auf – von grundlegenden Zielen der Hochschulbildung über neue praktische Gestaltungsmöglichkeiten der eigenen Lehre bis hin zu konkreten prüfungsrechtlichen Aspekten.
In diesem Workshop wird an verschiedenen Anwendungsfällen, d. h. Use Cases, von generativer KI in der Lehre gearbeitet. Gemeinsam findet ein Austausch statt, wie Lehrziele zu generativer KI in bestehende Lehrveranstaltungen integriert oder ganz neue Angebote konzipiert werden können. Dabei wird nach Ihren Bedarfen über technische, inhaltliche, methodische und prüfungsbezogene Aspekte gesprochen.

Ringvorlesung: Künstliche Intelligenz zwischen Handlungsmacht und gesellschaftlichen Gestaltungsbedarfen

Informatik und Sozial-/Kulturwissenschaft im Gespräch. Weit über die derzeit prominent diskutierte generative KI Chat-GPT hinaus, finden Technologien der Künstlichen Intelligenz Einsatz in diversen Gesellschaftsbereichen und treten zunehmend als Akteur*innen mit Handlungsmacht in Erscheinung. In kurzen Vorträgen werden historische und theoretische Grundlagen, sowie ausgewählte Anwendungsbereiche der Künstlichen Intelligenz vorgestellt und diskutiert. Anhand von Praxisbeispielen von KI in Anwendung und Entwicklung werden KI Technologie verständlich und für die Analyse greifbar.

Orientation Framework of the UHH on Dealing with AI-systems in Studies and Teaching (Document, date: 02/2024)

This document provides the university with an orientation framework for the use of generative artificial intelligence (gAI) in teaching and studying. It shows ways in which gAI can be used in teaching and studying under the guiding principle “education through science”. The formulation of this framework is based on the assumption that the field of gAI will continue to develop dynamically. For this reason, it is regularly reviewed and updated (every semester) by the Advisory Group on Digitalization in Teaching for the Executive Board of the University of Hamburg.

“ChatGPT and me” – First Results of the Quantitative Evaluation from the Survey of the DDLitLabs (Report)

As part of the DDLitLab, a survey on the use of generative AI has been conducted at the University of Hamburg. Over 1500 members of the University of Hamburg took part in the survey and therefore got first impressions in the new reality of life with generative AI in the University. The focus has been on the attitude and usage behavior of the members of the University of Hamburg. In a first research report we have evaluated the quantitative data.
