The University of Hamburg may confer the academic title of "professor" on persons who have distinguished themselves through outstanding achievements and who have successfully taught independently at UHH for at least three years. The requirements and procedure are set out in the University of Hamburg statutes on the conferral of the academic title "professor" (pdf). Professors according to § 17 section 1 HmbHG are obliged to offer courses amounting to two course hours per semester; this obligation expires upon retirement.
Upon application, the Faculty of Humanities can grant habilitated academics the teaching license as a "Privatdozent:in". The requirements and procedure are regulated in Universität Hamburg's statutes on the conferral of teaching authorization as a "Privatdozent:in" pursuant to § 17 section 2 of the HmbHG (Privatdozentursatzung, pdf). The award is made for a specific subject area.
