Karl H. Ditze Foundation
In addition to social purposes, the Karl H. Ditze Foundation supports four universities in Hamburg: the HAW Hamburg, the HFBK Hamburg, the TUHH and, since 1990, the humanities department at the University of Hamburg. A particular concern of the founder and the foundation was and is the promotion of talented young academics under the age of 35.
Funding of the Karl H. Ditze Foundation
Students at the Faculty of Humanities can receive one-off grants from the Karl H. Ditze Foundation, primarily for compulsory semesters abroad or other study-related stays abroad or for the examination phase. Doctoral students are excluded from funding, as are students who already receive other funding for the same purpose.
- Target group: Students (major subject or teaching subject) of the Faculty of Humanities who have achieved outstanding study/examination results within the standard period of study (age limit: 35 years)
- Funding: Semester/stay abroad within the EU one-off EUR 600, outside the EU one-off EUR 1,200 (in each case for accommodation costs); Bachelor's degree funding one-off EUR 1,000, Master's degree funding (or Church Examination, Magister and Diploma in Protestant Theology) one-off EUR 1,500.
- Application: Self-application within the application deadline, a favorable statement from a (supervising) professor is required.

Call for applications
The current call for applications for spring 2024 (pdf) ends on June 30, 2024 (cut-off date). Applications received after this date cannot be considered.
Students submit their applications digitally to the assistant of the dean, Nicole Nitschke (dekanatsref.gw"AT"uni-hamburg.de) by Thursday, 20 June 2024 (application deadline) including the following documents:
- Completed application form
- Short letter of motivation (approx. 1 page DIN A4)
- Transcript of Records (of studies) or current performance overview
- Short favorable statement from a (supervising) professor (½ to 1 page DIN A4)
- If applicable, additional proof of special need (e.g. BAFöG receipt, care tasks).
Karl H. Ditze Prize
The Karl H. Ditze Prize, which has been awarded since 2001, honors outstanding theses and dissertations from the Faculty of Humanities and the Faculty of Education at the Universität Hamburg. At the same time, its special feature within the Hamburg university landscape is honored: the unique diversity of the humanities.
- Target group: Graduates and doctoral students of the Faculty of Humanities and the Faculty of Education
- Prize: EUR 2,000 for a thesis, EUR 3,000 for a dissertation
- Application: Application is only possible by nomination (no self-application). All professors of the respective faculty are eligible to nominate candidates.
The following conditions apply to the selection procedure:
- The candidate must not be older than 35 years.
- The examination procedures of the proposed work must have been completed in accordance with the Foundation's procedural guidelines in the period between the last selection round at the respective faculties and the date of the current call for proposals, i.e. the grading procedures must have been completed by then (see procedure for awarding the Karl H. Ditze Prize (pdf, German only)).
- The prize proposals should be determined by a suitable committee in the respective department of the Faculty of Humanities or the Faculty of Education, e.g. by the Graduate Funding Committee.
- Two departments per year are invited to submit their proposals in rotation.

The call for application for the Karl H. Ditze Prize 2024 (pdf) is closed. The award ceremony will take place on December 4, 2024. The next call for entries is expected to begin in spring 2025.
