Studium Generale
A reflective approach to diverse knowledge cultures and the ability to critically self-reflect are important components of a university degree course. The Studium Generale particularly accentuates these skills in the structure of the Bachelor's degree courses of the participating faculties. Bachelor of Arts students have the opportunity to extend their view beyond the limits of their chosen combination of major and minor subjects and to develop critical perspectives on their own position in academic discourse.
Crossdisciplinary Learning in Studium Generale
Since the summer semester 2025, the Studium Generale program has been fed by the UHH's cross-faculty Crossdisciplinary Learning (CDL). In addition to the eight departments of the Faculty of Humanities, all UHH faculties contribute to the rich CDL offering, which currently consists of over 650 selectable courses from almost all UHH subjects. In addition, there are other special courses that are funded by the Excellence Strategy and are closely related to the strategic development goals and central research topics of the University of Hamburg. In future, current, socially relevant key topics will be identified separately in the CDL as thematic priorities. In individual areas, it will also be possible to acquire additional certificates by choosing certain courses in focus areas.
Organizational responsibility for the CDL lies with the central Hub for Crossdiscplinary Learning (HCL) (cdl"AT"uni-hamburg.de), which coordinates the semesterly curriculum and ensures that the courses offered have sufficient capacity. The CDL curriculum is academically curated by the Chamber of Studies and Teaching, in which the Vice Deans of Studies and Teaching of all faculties and the current Vice President for Studies and Teaching participate.
Registration and participation
Students register for courses in the CDL during the STiNE registration phases in their respective registration context. Students majoring in the Faculty of Humanities attend CDL courses as part of the Studium Generale.
