Thought and Religions
The profile initiative Thought and Religions is a recently established field of research focusing on European and global world views (religions, cultures, philosophies, thought systems, and languages) that opens up a fascinating world for researchers to explore. This area includes the disciplines of Buddhist studies, Islamic studies, and Jewish philosophy and religion. The numerous research projects of varying sizes within this research area deal predominantly with Jewish ideologies in Christian and Islamic cultural environments (particularly scepticism), medicine and bio-ethics in Islam, moral literature in Judaism, as well as the formation and development of philosophical and scientific Hebrew terminology in its various historical and cultural contexts.
Alongside smaller projects, this profile initiative includes the following large-scale projects: the DFG research group Maimonides Centre for Advanced Studies—Jewish Scepticism, the ERC project “COBHUNI—Contemporary Bioethics and the History of the Unborn in Islam,” the Emmy Noether Independent Junior Research Group Jewish Moralistic Literature (Musar) of the Early Modern Period, and the DFG long-term project “Premodern Philosophic and Scientific Hebrew Terminology in Context. An Online Thesaurus (PESHAT IN CONTEXT).”
