Application as an outgoing
The Erasmus+ application for a study abroad spot is always possible for the following academic year (winter semester and subsequent summer semester). Please contact us before the start of the application period in December so we can advise you in due time on all questions relating to your stay abroad.
Application requirements:
- enrolment at the University of Hamburg in a regular degree program (no exchange students)
- sufficient language skills in the language of instruction at the host university
For each study cycle (B.A., M.A. or PhD), one-semester stays of max. 3.5 months and two-semester stays of max. 7 months can be funded. According to DAAD guidelines, funding is not yet possible in the first B.A. study year; earliest possible funding: from the 3rd B.A. semester onwards.
The complete application documents for a study visit in the next academic year (winter semester and/or summer semester) must be submitted within the application period from December 1 to January 31.
If you would like to apply for any remaining spots after the application deadline, please contact the Erasmus Office of the Faculty of Humanities.
Students planning an Erasmus+ study visit apply online via the Mobility Online database.
When applying, please only enter your UHH email address (e. g.: name.surname@studium.uni-hamburg.de). The application cannot be processed without the official UHH email address.
Once you have created an applicant account, you can check your status online at any time by logging in with your STiNE ID. After your successful application, during your stay you can check which documents you still need to upload and when, e.g. in order to receive your 1st or 2nd funding installment.
As a first step, please complete the online application form in Mobility Online and submit it online. The next step is to complete your personal data in the database. Afterwards, please upload the following application documents (only as PDF):
- curriculum vitae in tabular form (e. g. Euro-Pass CV Template)
- letter of motivation (approx. 1-2 pages): Here, you will explain the academic reasons why you would like to study abroad at your preferred university and what significance the stay abroad has on your overall study plans.
Please state alternative partner universities that you are also considering for a stay abroad in Mobility Online. If you do not receive a spot for your first choice, you may still have the chance for an Erasmus+ spot at another university. However, please only refer to your first choice in your letter of motivation.
- preliminary course selection: The preliminary course selection serves as an initial orientation based on the courses offered by your potential host university and will be updated by you later if your application is successful. As a guide, please refer to the current course catalogue of the partner university, since by the time of your application the course catalogue for the upcoming academic year might not be published yet. Please have this preliminary Learning Agreement signed by your subject-specific Erasmus+ coordinator before uploading it.
- proof of language proficiency in the language of instruction (not older than two years, e. g. DAAD language certificate, certificate from the UHH Language Center or certificate from a language lecturer in your subject)
- proof of academic achievements to date (printout of your STiNE account or transcript of records; first-year Master's students can upload their B.A. diploma; first-semester Bachelor's students who do not yet have grades should upload a list of courses from STiNE and their Abitur diploma)
- certificate of enrolment from UHH for the current semester (semester certificate from STiNE)
Further information on the Erasmus+ program, the application procedure and the current application link to Mobility Online can be found here on the website of the Department of International Affairs of UHH: Study abroad with Erasmus+.
You can find step-by-step instructions for Mobility Online here.
Prepare yourself well for your studies abroad by learning the language. At least language level B1 is required in the language of instruction. However, some partner universities have higher requirements (see overview of Erasmus+ partner universities).
You can have your language level tested and receive a language certificate at the Language Center of the University of Hamburg. The Language Center also offers a wide range of courses.
