New Professor of Empirical Cultural Studies: Prof. Dr. Jan Simon Hutta

Since January 1, 2026, Prof. Dr. Jan Simon Hutta has been Professor of Empirical Cultural Studies in the Department of Cultural Studies.
Jan Hutta completed his degree in psychology with a minor in cultural studies at the Free University of Berlin in 2005. From 2006 to 2011, he earned his doctorate at the Department of Geography at the Open University in Milton Keynes, UK, with a dissertation on “Queer Geographies of Security: The LGBT Politics of Security and Formations of Agency in Brazil.” This was followed by positions as a postdoctoral researcher, lecturer at the Humboldt University of Berlin, and research assistant at the University of Bayreuth. Most recently, he was an academic advisor at the Chair of Cultural Geography at the University of Bayreuth since 2016, taking leave of absence at times for guest lectureships and substitute professorships in Brazil, among other places.
