Central locations of the faculty
The central buildings of the Faculty of Humanities are located around the Von-Melle-Park campus in the neighborhood of Dammtor station. In addition, the Faculty has around 15 other locations where researchers from the Faculty are housed, some of them on an interim basis.
Main building and wing buildings (ESA 1)
The historic main building of the university, which was built in 1911, and the two modern wing buildings ESA East and ESA West, which were built at the end of the 20th century, house the Dean's Office and the Faculty Administration as well as the Departments of Cultural Studies and Asia-Africa Studies.
Philosophy Tower (VMP 6)
The departments of Language, Literature and Media I, Language, Literature and Media II, History and Philosophy mainly teach, research and work in the Philosophy Tower at Von-Melle-Park 6. During the renovation of the Philosophy Tower from October 2017 to mid-2023, the affected departments will be housed in the interim quarters at Überseering 35 in City Nord. They moved back into the renovated Philosophy Tower in winter semester 2023/24.
Gorch-Fock-Wall 7 (GFW 7)
The Departments of Protestant Theology and Religions are based in Gorch-Fock-Wall 7, the former Hamburg Head Post Office, which stretches along Gorch-Fock-Wall for several hundred meters from Stephansplatz to Jungiusstraße. The Institute for German Sign Language and Communication of the Deaf and the Academy of World Religions are also located there.
